Risk factors that you can’t control:

  • Age
  • Race
  • Gender
  • Re-occurrence
  • A sexually transmitted virus called human papillomavirus (HPV)

Signs and Symptoms

  • A sore that doesn’t heal
  • A lump or thickening of the skin or lining of your mouth
  • A white or reddish patch on the inside of your mouth
  • Loose teeth
  • Poorly fitting dentures
  • Tongue pain
  • Jaw pain or stiffness
  • Difficult or painful chewing
  • Difficult or painful swallowing
  • Sore throat

Early indicators

  • Persistent red and/or white patch Non-healing ulcer
  • Progressive swelling or enlargement Unusual surface changes
  • Sudden tooth mobility without apparent cause
  • Unusual oral bleeding or epistaxis Prolonged hoarseness

Advanced indicators

  • Indurated area
  • Paresthesia, dysesthesia of the tongue or lips
  • Airway obstruction
  • Chronic earache (chronic serous otitis media)/otalgia
  • Trismus Dysphagia
  • Cervical lymphadenopathy Persistent pain or referred pain Altered vision
